On Monday July 14th 2014, GECCU was officially 50 years old. The Credit Union celebrated this milestone by having a special anniversary service at the Kingstown Methodist Church. The service was carried live on NBC Radio 705 and featured remarks from the Hon. Minister of National Mobilization, Frederick Stephenson and the President of GECCU and the St. Vincent Co-operative League, Kelvin Pompey. There was also well wishes read from the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU). The message was delivered by Sis. Laura Anthony-Browne.
GECCU’s 50th anniversary celebrations were marked with a lecture series, focusing on the pioneered commitment of the institution in the life of its members. Significantly important to this lecture series was the highlight on GECCU’s role in the socio-economic, political and spiritual development of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The inaugural lecture which was held on Thursday 23rd January 2014, was delivered by former President of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions and distinguished credit unionist, Mr. Melvin Edwards. He spoke on the topic “Credit Unions: A Pillar of Economic Growth and Development”. This was held in honour of foundation member Sis. Beryl Baptiste M.B.E.
The General Employees' Co-operative Credit Union Ltd (GECCU) in collaboration with the Forestry Department in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry Fisheries and Industry commemorated Earth Day, April 22nd 2014 by planting a Yellow Poui tree on the compound of the Kingstown Public Library.
The General Employees' Co-operative Credit Union Ltd (GECCU) will distribute 100 food baskets to our needy members as part of the ongoing activities for our 50th Anniversary celebrations.
GECCU is cognizant of the role our elderly members have played in building the Credit Union over the last 50 years and has organized this event as GECCU’s thrust to not only exercise our Corporate and Social Responsibility but to also reiterate the Credit Union Philosophy of “People Helping People” .
As part of on-going celebrations to mark its 50th anniversary, GECCU hosted its "All Things GECCU" exhibition on Friday June 27th 2014, in front the Kingstown Vegetable market.
The exhibition showcased the various products and services offered by the credit union, while also highlighting its milestones over the past 50 years. Members who are small business owners were also given the opportunity to showcase their products at the event.
